Frequently Asked Questions

  • Getting started is simple. Begin by scheduling a free 20-minute consultation. This consultation is an informal conversation where we learn about your needs, answer your questions, and determine together whether APP Speech & Language Services is the right fit. If we decide to move forward, we will send you an intake form to gather background information, followed by a service agreement outlining the scope of services and fees.

  • We work with individuals across the lifespan, from toddlers to adults. We believe that communication and literacy access is a lifelong right, and that it is never too early or too late to begin.

Please note that we are currently unable to serve Medicare-eligible patients. If you are unsure whether this applies to your situation, please reach out and we will do our best to help you find the right support.

  • At this time, APP Speech & Language Services is a private pay practice.

When services are tied to insurance authorization, the plan determines what is covered, how often we can meet, and sometimes even which goals we can pursue. We believe that the individuals and families we serve deserve care that is driven by their needs and potential, not by what a third-party payer will approve. Private pay allows us to move quickly, work flexibly, and always follow the clinical recommendations that are right for each person.

That said, private pay does not necessarily mean out-of-pocket. Upon request, we provide superbills: itemized receipts you can submit directly to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Many families are surprised by what their out-of-network benefits will cover. We encourage you to contact your insurance provider to ask about your out-of-network speech-language pathology benefits before assuming services are unaffordable.

We also work with families to identify grant funding for speech-generating devices (SGDs), SGD funding through insurance, and other financial resources to procure devices where applicable. If cost is a concern, please reach out. We are committed to helping families find a path to access wherever possible.

  • We believe that the most meaningful progress happens in real life, so we bring our services to you.

AAC implementation support and therapy take place wherever your family and loved one need it most: at home, in a private school or daycare setting, or out in the community in the real situations where communication matters.

Parent and caregiver education and coaching sessions are available in-home or via secure video call, giving families flexibility based on their schedule and preferences.

Evaluations are conducted in the home, which allows us to observe communication in a natural, comfortable environment. If an alternative location is needed, we are happy to make a plan that works for your family.

  • Our AAC evaluations are not a single-session assessment; they are a comprehensive, multi-week process designed to ensure that every recommendation is grounded in real data and real-life performance. While each case is unique, it would be fair to expect the process from intake to final recommendation to take about 12 weeks.

The process begins with a records review and intake session, completed by phone, written input, or in-person meeting based on the caregiver’s preference. During intake, we gather background information, review relevant reports and documentation, and learn about the individual's communication history, daily routines, and the environments where they communicate most.

Next, we meet directly with the individual to complete a feature matching analysis, a structured process that helps us identify which AAC system characteristics are the best fit based on their motor, cognitive, language, and sensory profile.

From there, we enter the trial phase, during which we spend several weeks trialing at least two AAC systems (preferably three). This typically involves 3 to 4 additional in-person or video visits in which we observe how the individual responds to different system features, vocabulary organization, and access methods. Caregivers and team members play an active role throughout this phase, providing feedback and observations between visits that directly inform our clinical decision-making.

Once the trial period is complete, we synthesize all of the data, including caregiver input and our own clinical observations, to make a final recommendation. A comprehensive written report is provided, along with an in-person meeting or video conference to walk through our findings and identify next steps for device procurement with the family.

  • An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is a formal evaluation conducted by a qualified professional who is not employed by or affiliated with your school district. Families have the right to request an IEE at public expense when they disagree with an evaluation conducted by the school district, including evaluations of speech, language, articulation, fluency, or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

You may want to consider requesting an IEE if you feel the district's evaluation did not fully capture your child's communication abilities, did not assess AAC as a potential support, or if the results don't align with what you observe at home or in other settings.

With 10 years of experience working inside public school systems, we understand how school-based evaluations are conducted, what drives eligibility decisions, and what it means for a communication disorder to have an adverse educational impact. That context matters. An IEE is not just a second opinion; it is an independent, objective assessment that must be considered by the district when making decisions about your child's eligibility and services. We know how to produce evaluations that are thorough, well-documented, and speak directly to the educational framework districts are required to work within.

Families typically initiate the IEE process by submitting a written request to the school district. The district must respond in a reasonable timeframe, either agreeing to fund the IEE or filing for a due process hearing to defend their original evaluation. Every district handles this process differently, so we recommend reaching out to us directly to discuss your specific situation and determine the best path forward.

Our IEEs include a comprehensive evaluation, a detailed written report, and a meeting to review findings with your family. We are committed to providing objective, thorough assessments that give families the information and documentation they need to advocate effectively for their child.
